Sawant was born as Neeru Sawant to Jaya Sawant and S.P. Sawant, a Mumbai policeman, who has been described as "very strict".Hailing from a poor family, she had only a few years of formal education,She dated Abhishek Avasthi with whom she participated in Nach Baliye . After the couple lost the contest against Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aamir Ali in 2007.
